Diversity and Inclusion - The Two Paramount Elements in Design

Years of research made by organisational scientists, sociologists, psychologists and others show that socially diverse groups (that is groups having members from different ethnicity, race, gender and creed, etc.) are more creative than homogenous groups. Such groups can solve complex and non routine problems with greater ease. This happens because people with varying backgrounds bring new information, focus on alternative viewpoints and make greater effort to strike harmony. In this ongoing age of computer technology, design is all-powerful to pass through every product, solution and moment of our lives. But, it has been noticed that the profession of designing lacks demographic diversity and as a result of this, it also lacks the culture of inclusion.

Organisational approach to diversity and inclusion

Both these elements are inter-dependent on each other and play an important role in future success of any brand. Businesses that provide web-solutions need to hire professionals from various underrepresented groups to improve efficiency and deliver more customised products while catering to individual client requirements. However, this diversity is not limited to just demographic backgrounds of professionals working as a team. It should also include factors like experience, creativity and perspective of the individuals. Thus, diversity in design should not be measured only by numbers, but by an overall approach an organisation takes in assimilating professionals, coming from contrasting backgrounds with different perspectives and creativity.

In the world of designing, the “minority” status does not only affect the community of future designers but also the appearance of clients and collaborators. From both practical and moral standpoints, diversity and inclusion in design industry promote a healthy environment that leads to more innovation through solving problems. Finally, this provides greater service to business as well as the society as a whole. This is what the ultimate objective of design is.

The flip side

Research shows, a socially diverse group is more prone to hostile interactions, lack of trust element, poor communication, lesser cohesion, more interpersonal conflict and discomfort among the members. These are the negative sides of having a team of individuals from diverse backgrounds.

Innovation calls for diversity

In any organisation and specially, in the world of design, there has to be a team, which is capable to innovate. Diversity is the most important factor, which enhances creativity. It encourages individuals to search for more realistic perspectives, which in turn helps making better decisions and more comprehensive solutions to problems. Thus, diversity in any organisational workforce proves to be most helpful in improving bottom line of the company.

To continue with organisational success and improvement, design industry should not only include professionals from diverse backgrounds but also make every effort to retain them by practising inclusion.
